The Jeremy Kyle Show is an American daytime television tabloid talk show presented by Jeremy Kyle that debuted in the United States and Canada on September 19, 2011 and ended on September 13, 2013. The series is based on Kyle's successful British talk series of the same name, which has been broadcasting on the UK's ITV and subsequently repeats shown on ITV2 since July 4, 2005.[1] The series is taped in New York, which allows Kyle to commute to Manchester to undertake contiguous taping of the British production atGranada Studios.[2] The program is a co-production of ITV Studios' U.S. subsidiary, ITV Studios America and Debmar-Mercury, which serves as distributor for the U.S. version while ITV keeps all international rights.[3]

Series background[edit][]

As with the UK version, the series uses a confrontational style, which sees guests attempt to resolve issues with others that are significant in their lives, such as family, relationship, sexdrugalcohol and other issues.[4][5]

The show's success – and controversial style – was one of the reasons why Fox and Lionsgate (owners of Debmar-Mercury) saw potential in adapting Kyle's show to the U.S.. By November 2010, the series was picked up in over 70% of American television markets, well ahead of its September 2011 debut.[6] Kyle will also have some competition among three other tabloid talkers, already established veterans (and all distributed by NBCUniversal Television Distribution), The Jerry Springer ShowThe Steve Wilkos Show and Maury. In addition, he also faces another talk show newcomer, Anderson.[2]

The Jeremy Kyle Show aired primarily on The CWMyNetworkTV and Fox affiliates, with some Big Three stations in scattered smaller markets.

On November 17, 2011, the show was renewed for a second season which began taping in July 2012.

Cancellation[edit][]

The Jeremy Kyle Show in the USA was cancelled on December 21, 2012, shortly after production wrapped on its second season. The second season episodes are slated to air until the end of their run sometime in mid-2013. In a joint-statement to Broadcasting and Cable, Debmar-Mercury co-presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein said, "We can confirm the U.S. version of 'The Jeremy Kyle Show' won't be returning for a third season. This is in no way a reflection of the quality of the show. Backed by a first-rate production team, Jeremy was amazing and showed all of us why he is such a rock star in the UK. Simply put, Jeremy is one of the best hosts we have ever seen, and we expect to see more of him on U.S. television in the years ahead. Unfortunately, talk shows like this simply take time to build and, while we were seeing ratings progress in many markets, it wasn't enough to justify going forward with another season." The series finale aired September 13, 2013.

Initial reception[edit][]

Before its American debut, Broadcasting & Cable writer Ben Grossman noted in his article that his show could be a threat to Anderson Cooper and yet another confrontational tabloid talk veteran, Jerry Springer, whom Kyle replaced back in the UK when Springer's version of his U.S. talk show aired there.[7] Cooper's show would also end the same season as Kyle's program did.
