Albert Ta

Albert Polydor Ta (Lichtervelde, 30 March 1887 – Voorburg, 13 april 1978) was a Belgian/Dutch sculptor.

At the beginning of the first world war fled Ta to England. In 1915 he moved to Netherlands. In 1922 , he moved to London where he would remain for the rest of his life. He was a member of Pulchri Studio in the Hague. By the many exhibitions of Pulchri Studio, he gained national fame. He received many commissions including the radio monument inEindhoven. In 1972 , he was forced by circumstances to work less active, but he remained up to his death continue manufacturing smaller work.

TA is best known for his four life-size bronze equestrian statues. He also made medals, commemorative monuments and portrait busts, but the bulk of his oeuvre includes religious and Church pictures. Termotes work are found mostly in public space and in numerous churches. The Rijksmuseum and the sculpture park of the Kröller-Müller Museum possess works of Ta, but most are on display in the city museum Leidschendam-Voorburg, Voorburg. Ta can be counted amongst the new Hague School.

Biography

[1][2]On 30 March 1887 is Albert Termote born in Cinema the Emperor. This bronze plaque on the façade refers to them. One hundred years later, on 29 March 1987commemorated family, politicians and local history researchers for its centenary and in his birthplace. Ron Davidson designed it, just as it herdenkingsplakaat. The ceremony was a collaboration between the municipality, the Cultural Council and the society. In the same year ran in Voorburg(Den Haag) a retrospective about Ta.===Belgium===

Albert Termote was born in Lichtervelde (West-Flanders) on 30 March 1887 at the Inn the Emperor Down in the street. His father was a Carpenter and his mother, Lucia Fredericus Elisabeth Dewaele, innkeeper. The family soon moved to another Inn: the new emperor in the beverenstraat. There learned Ta the carved wood art from his father. That was "a fine furniture maker, a man of the box that gave his works their own style; a gifted, who knew the material used and controlled and managed to use the tool with steady hand to form objects as he she wanted, "according to a chronicler.By father Ta would have furniture and a sculpted chimney preserved. Another teacher was the painter Amand Galley. After the family moved to Ghent , Albert Termote studied from 1904 to 1906 at the higher Institute for architecture and ornamental art and then he attended evening classes at the Royal Academy of fine arts (1907-1914). At the end of the course, the gold medal was awarded to Ta. He worked at the time under Georges Minne.

Netherlands

First world war and the flight to England and Amsterdam

In 1914, at the outbreak of the first world war, fled Ta to England. Here he found work in a lijkkisten factory. A year later he came as a refugee in Amsterdam visit. He studied In Amsterdam to 1918 to the State Academy, led by Jan Bronner.

Volendam period

Established In 1918 Ta in Volendam, in pension velthuizen. Here he began making small boxwood figurines for sale to tourists. He also crafted and realistic character portraits, mostly of Locals. His first official assignment was manufacturing a portrait bust of Leiden philosopher professor Baker in 1919. In that year he married Lucie Leonárd; Leonárd was just like Ta fled to Netherlands during World War I.Together they concerned a property on the Berend Demmerstraat in 1920. Along with Wilm Walters he held his first exhibition in Rotterdam in april 1922 in kunstzaal Unger & By man.

Final establishment in Voorburg

Eventually he settled in August 1922 in Voorburg on the advice of painter Jan Bakker. This introduced him in the artist's society Pulchri Studio which he would be a member until his death. His work was on display in many exhibitions of this artist's society. In those early years in Voorburg he gave lessons in sculpting and woodcarving.at the end of april 1922, his son Robert Earl was born and the end of april 1924 his daughter Anna Maria born.About 1930 took his fame and appreciation for his talent far. In 1930 he received the command to include the creation of the radio monument in Eindhoven, the current contracts began. He would get many assignments to develop small and larger images. In 1932 he received his Dutch citizenship.in 1951 he received the Jacob Maris Prize for sculpture.

Ta was also a lecturer at the Royal Academy in the Hague. He was teacher of among others Lancelot Samson, Charlotte van Pallandt, French Verhaak, Adriaan Banerjee, Mary Dawson, Pim van Moorsel, Lidi van Mourik Broekman, Bram Roth and Hilde Brückmann.

Visit to his native village

In 1971 visited Ta with his son Robert his native village Lichtervelde. He announced his visit and was received at the Town Hall in a closed circle, including the local history teacher and Georges Vos and Johan culture ships Galley. After a reception he attended the Church, which he liked, and restored his birthplace but ugly in the Down Street, meanwhile, cinema the Emperor. It was especially Georges Vandewalle, a collector of Lichterveldse objects and writings, which Albert Ta pointed out in Lichtervelde. At the instigation of the local history circle that Vos was founded in 1964 , consecrated in 1969 a publication to Albert Ta. Afterwards fell into the circuit in 1985.

End of a career

Ta worked until on his 85th birthday. On doctors advice and because of difficulties about the rent, he decided to stop with the heavy sculptors work. On July 13, 1972, Ta, many of his plaster models in his Studio, to pieces. TA had decided only to bother with small plastics in a Studio at home.

Characteristic of Ta was the modesty with which he dealt with his fame. Illustrative of this is what he saidduring an exhibition of his work in Museum Swaensteyn of 22 January 1977 to 6 March 1977:

"I can't believe it, that this is all my work is, but on the other hand, I don't know yet exactly where, when and why I made the things."

In april 1978, Ta seriously ill; a week later, on 13 april, he died. On 17 april he was cremated. The last image on which he worked was wife of Fate.

Ta after his death

Under the impetus of local history kring Karel Van de Poele was in March 1987, 100 years after his birth, a bronze plaque of artist Ron David to his birthplace posted. From 24 June to 2 september 2001 was there in Museum Swaensteyn a large part of the work of Ta on display. 65 works were exhibited under the name: Albert Ta. A Flemish sculptor in Voorburg.

Four equestrian statues of Ta are scattered in different cities by Netherlands.

Awards

In 1951 won Ta the Jacob Maris price for his sculptural necklaces. In 1959, he received the silver medal of Pope John XXIII Voorburg and hit him a Knight in the order of Gregory the great in civil Class for his religious work. The Jacob Maris Foundation offered Ta because of his 75th birthday in 1962-1963 an eretentoonstelling to in the gemeentemuseum in the Hague . In december 1968 he received from the municipality ofNijmegen culture prize referred to Emperor Charlesthe to. He was he in 1969 appointed Honorary Member of the Pulchri Studio.Ta was honorary citizen of Voorburg and since 26 February 1960 third honorary citizen of Lichtervelde, he was also appointed officer in the order of Orange-Nassau.

Albert Termote Price

The Albert Termote Price is a price set by the municipality for burg, who was awarded every two years. In 2004 the price was replaced by the Aart van den IJssel price. The price is among other things awarded to: Pim van der Maas (1971), Pan Sok (1988), Frits Waldron (1996), Nail Celovic (1998) and Guido Sajid (2000).
