Alfons Blomme (Roeselare2 February 1889 – died 10 June 1979) was a Flemish artist.

Biography[Edit]Edit

From 1902 followed Bailey classes at the Academy of drawing, construction and sculpture. In 1909 he took out the highest award. As a future house painter he also followed courses at the Industrial school. He would, however, never exercising that profession. Bailey completed his studies at the Royal Academy of fine arts in Brussels. When he went to Brussels to study, he came into contact with art nouveau and neo-Impressionism. He is at this art style remained, even though his contemporaries went to the surrealism. He discovered the work of Emile Claus and developed its own pointillist technique. This was wide-pointillist and is sometimes referred to as bar technique. Large patches of colour are not colorized but with large dots or stripes filled in. This was Later referred to as ' blommisme '.

The first world war were spent in Zeeland in the Netherlands, Renesse. After his return, he won the Grand Prix of Romein 1920. Alfons Blomme traveled much and let himself inspire by his travels to landscapes, cityscapes and portraits of buildings. Painting was not his only artistic activity. He also drew sketches and made sculptures. From 1935 to 1940 he was Director of the Art Academy of Ostend .

In 1929 married Bailey with Kaatje Damy. After his marriage he left the capital for the coastal region and settled in the Villa Martha to the De HaanDriftweg in. There he came in contact with as art teacher in 1933Albert Einstein and his daughter. They became friends and Bailey should make a portrait of Einstein.

Bailey was a veelschilder, in that his paintings by the multiple of their occurrence in value sank. Sometimes he paid bills with paintings. After the Second World War he organized various exhibitions that include the visit of Queen Elizabeth got.

In december 1972 he opened the Alfons Blommemuseum in the East Street in Roeselare. The museum went after his death, his works were kept there, and the entire contents in a will after the city of Roeselare. The museum was later transformed into an art gallery by the city. On the occasion of the centenary of his birth was the square at the junction of the Delaerestraat and the Alfonsusstraat to the Blommeplein Saint Alfons renamed. The square was further embellished with a bust of Alfons Blomme Roeselare, carved by Julianne Szücs.

Work of Bailey is also found in the collection of the KaZ in Ostend (the merger of the PMMK and the MSK in Ostend), including a portrait of Albert Einstein and one of James Ensor.
