Life Course[Edit]Edit

Early life and education[Edit]Edit

Babe came from a wealthy family, his father was a lawyer, so he never did have to make for its daily bread. At the age of 13 he studied piano, music theory and composition at the Hampstead Conservatory. Then he went in 1900 to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied with Tobias Augustus Matthay piano and composition with Frederick Corder. By a study trip to Dresden and in-depth study of the works ofFranz Liszt and Richard Wagner the young Bax underwent the influence of the German late romanticism.

Inspiration Ireland[Edit]Edit

The reading of works of the poet W.B. Yeats and a trip to Ireland affected around 1902 the romantic interest of the 19-year-old for the Celtic-Irish culture with her legendenwereld. In his long stay in Ireland he took a second form and published under the pseudonym of Dermot O'Byrne poems and short stories. He also traveled to Russia and went to the West of Scotland.

Post-war disillusionment[Edit]Edit

The first world war Bax drove back to England, where he withdrew more and more into his private life. Because he was financially independent, he could live a life as a free composer and lead every now and then as conductor.

Orchestral Works[Edit]Edit

The symphonic work of Bax consists of a number of tone poems, in which the romantic nature experience and Celtic ideas to Impressionist mood images merge in a Tristan-like tones: The Garden of Fand (1916),November Woods (1917) and Tintagel (1919) are among the best known of these program work. In the years 1921-1939 there were then seven large-occupied symphonies, in which the element behind a presentation programmatically-rapsodisch with the classical sonata form will step down as Chairman.

Piano Music[Edit]Edit

Bax was a gifted pianist because he especially the fine-vista-controlled game, but he almost never gave concerts. In his piano works are also outside-to recognize musical impressions, for example after his journey through Russia.

The last work[Edit]Edit

His last composition was a CoronationMarch for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
