He was a late bloomer: at the age of 18, he was only a member of a football team, DJK. Macdonald made his debut in professional football in 1983 at Telstar. In his first season he fell in an away match against SC Heracles. In a 5-1 victory he took all the hits from his club for his account.
He then played a year at FC Volendam and two years at Roda JC. The season ' 87/' 88 he played for Ajax.
