Ray Charles Robinson ( Albany ( Georgia ), September 23 1930 - Beverly Hills ( California ), June 10 2004 ) was a blind American singer and pianist , and a great exponent of modernblues and rhythm and blues .

Development edit ]Edit

In the 50s he developed this music further with the introduction of elements of the church gospel music , where the women's chorus plays a prominent role. As Ray Charles, was usually accompanied by a group of singers (the Raelettes ), at the birth of the soul with songs like I got a woman , The nighttime is the right time and What'd I Say . Legendary is the performance of the latter song during an outdoor concert in Atlanta , Georgia in 1959. That performance was a highlight in his career.

In 1960 a radical change of style followed: violins and pop were introduced. The blues and rhythm and blues were dismissed. Ray Charles scored some mega hits with Hit the road Jackand I can not stop loving you , and his rendition of Georgia on my mind was that song to an evergreen . Notoriously his number Busted that he wrote after he had been in prison for a year for possession of heroin .

Ray Charles died on June 10, 2004 at the age of 73, as a result of liver cancer in his home in Beverly Hills, California, in front of family and friends. He was buried in a mausoleum of the Golden West at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.

About the life of Charles is a film starring Jamie Foxx : Ray (2004) .
