Romário de Souza Faria or simply Romário ( IPA: [ʁomaɾiu] ) ( Rio de Janeiro , January 29 1966 ) is a former Brazilian footballer nicknamed "O Baixinho" , loosely translated, "Little One". Romário is considered by many as one of the best strikers ever. During his playing career, he made more than 1,000 goals and won several major awards such as the World Cup , the Copa America and several national championships, including the Premier League and La Liga . The former world footballer of the year was by Pele in March 2004 stated in the preparedlist FIFA 100 best players .

Romário was born and grew up in the favelas of Jacarezinho, one of the slums of Rio de Janeiro, and he played street football like so many Brazilians. He began as a club footballer at Olaria Atlético Clube in 1983. In 1985 Romário moved to the Brazilian top club CR Vasco da Gama .After the Olympic Games of 1988, he was bought by PSV Eindhoven . In the Netherlands, Romário was very successful with three league titles and two cups. FC Barcelona in 1993 his new club. Romário made by the Catalan club part of the illustrious Dream Team . He played in a contest before finally stopping in 2010. Romario threw himself after his active football career in politics where he is a member of the Socialist Party.

Romário played 79 international matches, in which he scored 64 goals. The attacker won by Brazil in 1988, silver at the Olympics in Seoul . This tournament was the breakthrough of Romário. With seven matches he led his country to the final, which was lost 2-1 to the Soviet Union . The 1994 World Cup in the United States was won by Romário with Brazil. Romário's top scorer with three titles in the Campeonato Brasileiro co-record holder with Darío (seventies) and Tulio (eighties and nineties). He is seven times top scorer of the Campeonato Carioca (championship of the State of Rio de Janeiro ) record. Romario was a long time hunting for 1000 goals in professional football (including youth and amateur competitions), a feat for him only by Pelé was delivered (and according to some, by Arthur Friedenreich ). On April 8 , 2007 , when Romario according to its own counter stood at 999 goals, reported De Volkskrant that though he had forgotten that he himself played a match with PSV against New Buinen to count, so he already 1000 on March 25 , 2007 would have been reached. The message was world but Romario stuck to his 999 goals.  Moreover, this goal was not made by Romario as the archivist of PSV but Twan Scheepers . On 20 May 2007, the time had come, in a match against Sport Recife striker scored 46 minutes from a penalty kick his 1000th goal. This he was mobbed by teammates and journalists. The contest was sixteen minute silent.
