Sheng-yen ( Shanghai , January 3 1930 - Taipei , February 3 2009 ) was one of the most famous teachers of Zen Buddhism . Master Sheng-yen was the 57th generation of the Linji School (Japanese: Rinzai school ).

Sheng-yen was at the age of thirteen monk . In 1949 he fled because of the Communist takeover in Taiwan . The years between 1961 and 1968 he spent in solitary retreat by. In 1971 he earned a master's in 1975 and a doctorate in Buddhist literature in Japan . In 1979 he became abbot of Nung Ch'an Monastery in Taiwan and in 1980 he founded the Institute of Chung-Hwa Buddhist Culture in New York City .

In the '80s he often taught in the United States . He also visited many countries in Europe and Asia . In this way he tried to bridge the gap between the eastern and the western world , and he sought the Dharma (the teachings / natural law of Buddha to bring.) to the west Sheng-yen has had many Western students, including the British ethologist and sociologist John Crook. He died at the age of 79.
