Thomas Midgley Junior (May 18, 1889 – november 2, 1944) was an inventor from Ohio trained as an engineer.

He developed an interest in the industrial application of chemistry. In 1921 he lead compound Tetra examined for General Motors, the substance turned out to be added to gasoline to reduce the knocking of engines. This substance was since then without restraint used, which no curiosity is because lead already in practically everything was to be found in that time, also in consumer goods. There was not yet known that many lead compounds serious nerve gifts are.

CFC or hydrochlorofluorocarbon Midgley Later found out, a connection that the previously dangerous ammonia used in refrigerators had to be replaced. From 1930 the CFCs found many applications, from air conditioners to aerosol propellant . Only much later it was discovered that this little reactive gases play an important role in the breakdown of ozone in the stratosphere. In addition, CFCs a serious greenhouse gas, which they hold the heat ten thousand times more effective per molecule than carbon dioxide.

Midgley has this never knew because he died before anyone realized this. He died in 1944 at the hands of a self-designed machine that had to help him in bed to come right after he was crippled by polio.
